 Mission: Holy Incarnation

“ . . . being an example first, before talking . . .”

We’re in the Misseo Dei business, the mission of God. If we simply imitate the culture, we miss God. If we disengage people, we miss the boat.
If I’m not engaging non-believers, those estranged from Life in the Kingdom, not only are they missing out on the Gospel, but so am I. For Abraham heard the Good News that all the people of the world would be blessed, not just the church people (Gal 3). Israel would be a light to the Gentiles (Acts 13). The ‘called out’ would reveal God’s wisdom to the world (Eph 3).
The Word of God put on flesh. The Light of the world shone among us. Heaven came down. The Kingdom of God breaking into the tribes of men, even into us . . .
Holiness moving into the neighborhood. Spirituality in working clothes. Bringing the distinctive and engaging Christian life into the midst of others, . . . into a group of volunteers in a rainforest or on a former landfill, in a Music with Mummy class, or with rock climbers.

"I have set you to be a light for the Gentiles, so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.' " Acts 13:47

Charlie* has dreadlocks. He’s not a volunteer, but a conservation contractor. Not much money in that. On weekends, a Trance music DJ. A calm, peaceful, de-churched person, more skeptical of Christianity than world religions.
I met Charlie while volunteering and had about a two hour conversation while microweeding together in a rainforest. It was mostly, if not all, a spiritual conversation. I did a lot of listening and respecting and a couple times I was really preaching right there on the ground in the rainforest while micro-weeding.

Attractive

“ . . . tell them what you saw at Mangerton . . .”

We sometimes ask God, Are we doing what we need to be doing? Knock doors? Gospel meetings?

I remember a sermon by Jim Baird in the small Perkins church of Christ in Oklahoma when I was in high school. He said something like, “No scripture can make people feel guilty for not evangelizing. But lots of scripture encourages believers to walk worthily of their calling. If we do this we’ll make the Gospel attractive.”

But how do you measure how well you’re making the Gospel attractive? We don’t need a rock band or a kool-aid stand; we need discipleship to the Son of Man. We seek the kingdom of God, his reign in life, in order to become who we were created to be. But confidence in a simple no frills Gospel isn’t everything.

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Col 4:5-6

. . . so that in every way [you] will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive. Titus 2:10

I remember a sermon by Bob Turner at Whitestation church of Christ in Memphis. He said, “Jesus associated with and served shameful people. The motley crews liked him more than the good religious folks did. But it was not his goal simply to be liked; Jesus hung out with sinners because he wanted them to repent.” We ask God, How are we doing with that?

In Titus, Paul tells Christian slaves to try to please their masters, not to talk back, not to steal, but to show they can fully be trusted, “so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.”
